keep watch

Keep watch.  It’s my daily job description. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But with way to much on my to do list, “keeping watch” gets lost in the shuffle. I have to be mindful.  Mindful that Jesus is present.  Mindful that His Holy Spirit is at work…speaking, counseling, acting. Nobody talks more than the Holy Spirit.  No one acts with greater power.  But am I watching? Listening? I will blow right past the invisible world of the Spirit if I am not keeping watch.

In the book of Acts, Luke  reminds me to keep watching,  especially for Jesus’s return to earth. After His resurrection and ascension back up to heaven, two angels appeared to the watching disciples. The angels said this:

Why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven. (Acts 1:11)

Do I really believe Jesus will come back?  I wonder if I would live differently. How about you?  What if you thought He might come back today… or tomorrow?  I’m not talking about another “end of the earth” scare campaign.  Rather, I’m  reminding myself to stay focused on the eternal. Which is how we should live anyway. Begin today with the end in mind.  Keep watch.  And continue to listen to God’s whispers and roars.  Remember, He is always speaking. Are you listening?  Are you keeping watch?
